Thumbnails are the brainstorming phase of visual art — quick, rough sketches where you rapidly work out concepts composition, and scale before committing to any refinements. To be all 2000s start-up about it, they "let you fail fast and cheap", exploring multiple directions in minutes rather than hours. That said, I'm generally really bad at becoming over invested in a piece even at this stage.

Keeping it notional takes a bit of discipline.
